Origins

Hackney Weightlifting Club is the oldest weightlifting club in England. The first record of the club can be traced back to 1924, when it was based in Tottenham Road, Dalston. It was next shown in 1947, when it was based at 180 Mare Street, under the name Hackney Central Weightlifting Club. Sometime in the 1950s it moved to Berger Road School in Homerton. The club was one of many in the area, all of which have since closed down. In 1970, Hackney Weightlifting Club moved to Morningside, Field Path building, where we are today.

Creating Champions

We have developed members into world-class lifters, preparing them for the world stage — Dyana Altenor (53kg class), Juliana August (69kg class) and Giles Greenwood (+105kg class) were all coached and trained at the club, by coach Pat Atteridge (European Masters Champion 2007), and represented Great Britain at the 2002 Commonwealth Games

Greenwood taking Gold in the Snatch; Bronze in the Clean and Jerk; finishing with Silver in the Total.
